Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries
Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries are an easy snack to serve with your favorite dipping sauce or a quick side dish to pair with my epic Portobello Mushroom Burger or Grilled Carrot Dogs. And cooking them in the air fryer is much healthier than deep frying. These golden brown fries are ready in less than 30 minutes. They’re easy to make, gluten-free and naturally vegan making them the perfect side dish.
Do these fries make my butt look big? They shouldn’t, because, unlike their deep-fried counterparts, air frying any kind of French fries reduces fat and calories making air fryer French fries a much healthier alternative to traditional ones fried in oil. Here’s to a healthy way to cook French fries and your new favorite way to cook sweet potatoes.
🥔 Simple Ingredients (With Substitutions)
- sweet potatoes – for best results, choose organic sweet potatoes if you can find them. Otherwise, regular ones are fine. Check them for bruising or damage before you buy. You can leave the skins on (for more fiber) or peel them, whichever you prefer. You can also use this recipe to cook regular potato fries.
- Avocado Oil – I use avocado oil for this recipe but you can also use extra virgin olive oil or an olive oil-based cooking spray. You can also use vegetable oil or canola oil, or any neutral oil you have on hand. Using cooking spray saves calories because you use less oil.
- Sea Salt & Black Pepper – sweet potato fries and sea salt? I’m all over it. Fine or course will do.
- Optional Seasonings (not pictured) – these fries are so versatile, and can be seasoned in so many different ways. Think of adding Italian seasoning, cumin, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, dried herbs like rosemary or thyme, smoked paprika and/or onion powder and chili powder; the sky’s the limit.

🍟 Step-By-Step Instructions
The cooking process is so easy. Take a look:
Wash and pat dry sweet potatoes. Peel, and cut off ends.
Cut in half, then in thin slices. If you want thicker fries, cut them thicker. You can even do thick wedges, but remember to cook them longer. It’s ok if they aren’t picture-perfect.
Soak slices for 30 minutes in a bowl of ice cold water. This removes excess starch allowing them to cook more evenly.
Drain and pat dry. Place in large mixing bowl. Add oil and coat fries evenly.
Add sea salt and other seasonings and toss until evenly coated.
Place in a single layer in the air fryer. Air fry on 380F/193C until crispy and golden brown, usually about 18-20 minutes. Give it a little shake every 5-7 minutes so they cook evenly and don’t burn. Once done, remove and place on a paper towel layer to absorb excess oil. Serve piping hot!
