Homemade Vegan Hollandaise Sauce in Minutes
Nothing screams sunshine more than this homemade Vegan Hollandaise Sauce recipe. With notes of bright citrus and subtle spices, this silky sauce is made on the stovetop and ready in less than 30 minutes.
Serve it drizzled over Cauliflower Mashed Potatoes or my Vegan Croissant Stuffing. Scramble.

Bring in the season with this vibrant, delicious Vegan Hollandaise Sauce, one of the most versatile sauces on the planet. With this recipe, we skip the real butter and egg yolks – loaded in saturated fat – and replace them with plant-based ingredients.
I love to serve this fun and fresh vegan version of a mother sauce for Mother’s Day or Easter brunch, or any time I need a tasty vegan sauce that’s quick and easy to make.
🍋 Ingredients (With Substitutions)

- Lemon Juice – I love using fresh lemon juice in the vegan hollandaise sauce, but bottled is fine too, especially if it’s organic. If you love lemons, try my Vegan Lemon Poppyseed Cake!
- Vegan Mayonnaise – makes the hollandaise sauce ultra rich and creamy. For a healthier version, omit the vegan mayo and replace it with a cup of silken tofu.
- Vegan Butter – helps emulsify all the ingredients. You can substitute with any plant-based margarine.
- Nutritional Yeast – I love adding nutritional yeast to vegan hollandaise, not only for a boost of B-vitamins, but it adds a warm, nutty flavor to anything you add it to.
- Turmeric – used primarily to give the sauce it’s yellow color, but it also has many healing properties. You can use more, or less, depending upon how yellow you want it.
- Black Salt – or Kala Namak, is a Himalayan salt often used in Indian dishes. It’s the go-to salt for vegans who still enjoy the taste of eggs, but don’t eat them. It’s rich in iron and minerals and adds a subtle “eggy” flavor to whatever you add it to. Of course, if unavailable, you can simply use sea salt.
- White Pepper – I like using white pepper in the sauce because it doesn’t alter the beautiful yellow color. Alternatively, you can use black pepper, instead.
- White Wine – this is an optional ingredient, but I love to add a tablespoon or two to the sauce as it gives it a rich, full-bodied flavor.
- Fresh Garlic – minced garlic is another optional ingredient for garlic lovers. 1 clove is more than enough. You can substitute with 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder if you don’t have fresh.

🥣 Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: melt vegan butter over low heat in a small skillet. Since we’re not using egg yolks, there’s no need for a double boiler.

Step 2: add vegan mayonnaise, nutritional yeast, turmeric, lemon juice, black salt and white pepper.

Step 3: increase to medium heat while stirring continuously with a whisk or spatula until ingredients are thoroughly melded together. Simmer gently for 2-3 minutes until you have a beautiful, creamy vegan hollandaise sauce. Reduce heat if necessary. DO NOT BRING TO A BOIL! .

Serve this lemony sauce warm, drizzled over your favorite vegan eggs benedict.
Pro Tips for the Best Sauce Ever
- Sauce too thick? If sauce is too thick, simply add a splash of plant milk (like oat milk or soy milk) to thin and stir until well-incorporated.
- Whisk longer than you think – blend sauce ingredients using a spatula or whisk right in the skillet on the stove for 1-2 minutes. As you keep blending, the ingredients emulsify so the sauce goes from slightly gritty to ultra-smooth.
- Add hot water at the end – after sauce is completely smooth, add 1-2 tsp of hot water, then stir well, to get a smooth, pourable consistency.
What to Pair with Vegan Hollandaise Sauce
Vegan hollandaise pairs well with grilled asparagus, my crispy Air Fryer Smashed Potatoes, or my easy Tofu Scramble Recipe.
It’s also ideal for Vegan Eggs Benedict, or Tofu Benedict (using smoked tofu and a slice of my smoky Vegan Ham or Banana Peel Bacon), or as a creamy drizzle over steamed broccoli or Vegan Mushroom Wellington.
