🍋 Ingredients (With Substitutions)
- Asparagus – I prefer organic asparagus for this recipe, which, as you can see, is much smaller than non-organic brands that are pumped with who knows what. But any type of asparagus will do, and white asparagus is divine in this recipe, if you can find it.
- Olive Oil – extra virgin olive oil, along with sea salt and pepper, are tossed in with the asparagus before placing on the grill. If olive oil is not on hand, any neutral oil will do.
- Lemon Juice – I love using fresh lemon juice in the vegan hollandaise sauce, but bottled is fine too, especially if it’s organic. If you love lemons, try my Vegan Lemon Poppyseed Cake!
- Vegan Mayonnaise – makes the hollandaise sauce ultra rich and creamy. For a healthier version, omit the vegan mayo and replace it with a cup of silken tofu.
- Vegan Butter – helps emulsify all the ingredients. You can substitute with any plant-based margarine.
- Nutritional Yeast – I love adding nutritional yeast to vegan hollandaise, not only for a boost of B-vitamins, but it adds a warm, nutty flavor to anything you add it to.
- Turmeric – used primarily to give the sauce it’s yellow color, but it also has many healing properties. You can use more, or less, depending upon how yellow you want it.
- Black Salt – or Kala Namak, is a Himalayan salt often used in Indian dishes. It’s the go-to salt for vegans who still enjoy the taste of eggs, but don’t eat them. It’s rich in iron and minerals and adds a subtle “eggy” flavor to whatever you add it to. Of course, if unavailable, you can simply use sea salt.
- White Pepper – I like using white pepper in the sauce because it doesn’t alter the beautiful yellow color. Alternatively, you can use black pepper, instead.
- White Cooking Wine – this is an optional ingredient and not pictured, but I love to add a tablespoon or two to many of my sauces as it gives them such a rich, full-bodied flavor.
- Fresh Garlic – minced garlic is another optional, not pictured ingredient for garlic lovers. 1 clove is more than enough. You can substitute with 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder if you don’t have fresh.

🥬 How To Grill Asparagus
Step 1 – rinse asparagus and pat dry. Place on cutting board. With a sharp knife, cut 1 1/2 to 2 inches from the ends.
Step 2 – place asparagus in a shallow dish. Add olive oil, sea salt and black pepper. Toss with hands until evenly coated.
Step 3 – with tongs, place asparagus on a preheated indoor or outdoor grill being careful not to overlap the spears. You may have several batches, depending upon the size of your grill.
Step 4 – after about 4-5 minutes, turn asparagus and grill the other sides for another few minutes until almost-tender. Remove from grill and place on a serving platter. Drizzle with vegan hollandaise sauce (you may want to reheat it for a minute or two as you want it warm). Enjoy!
👩🏻🍳 Expert Tips
