🍹 Ingredients For Blackberry Mojita
- White Rum - the star of the show, white rum (light rum) can be any brand that you favor most. You can also use dark rum but it may not look the same.
- Lime - fresh limes work best, however bottled lime juice will work if fresh limes are unavailable. Garnishing with fresh lime wedges is also recommended.
- Club Soda - gives the blackberry mojito a little bubbly pizazz! You could replace with sparkling water, if you wish (some people even use Ginger Ale).
- Mint - fresh mint is part of a traditional mojito and works very well with this version. It also makes a great garnish.
- Sugar - please note, not all sugars are vegan. You may substitute with Agave Nectar or vegan simple syrup if you prefer.
- Ripe Blackberries - fresh berries are essential for this fruity cocktail, but if impossible to find, blackberry syrup will also work. If you love blackberry cocktails, try my Blackberry Smash made with gin.

📋 How To Make A Blackberry Mojito
Add the blackberries, granulated sugar, lime juice and mint leaves to a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously until the blackberries and mint leaves have pulverized. Alternatively, you can place the blackberries, mint leaves and lime juice in a small bowl and use a muddler to mash the ingredients to release their flavor. Without straining, add the muddled ingredients to a cocktail shaker, add sugar and shake gently.
Add the rum and fill the cocktail shaker about half-way with ice cubes. Shake again.
Pour the contents of the shaker (no need to strain) in an ice-filled tall glass or a highball glass. You can even drink it out of a mason jar.
Top with club soda. Garnish with mint, juicy blackberries and a lime wedge. Enjoy immensely on a hot summer day (or any day for that mattter)!
👩🏻🍳 Expert Tips
- Choose berries that are glossy with deep color. Avoid berries that are crushed, bruised or contain mold.
- Use crushed ice instead of cubed. It helps bring out the intensity of the muddled ingredients.
- Slap mint leaves on the back of your hand before garnishing to release their flavor.
- If using granulated sugar, make sure to shake the cocktail shaker vigorously and long enough so that it dissolves, rather than sink to the bottom of the glass when serving.
- Although dark rum can be used for this Blackberry Mojito, it tends to overpower the fruity flavors of the drink. Choose white, or light rum, for best results.
- To make a big batch of these to be served in a pitcher, simply move the slider in the recipe card below to the number of servings you desire.
🍓 Variations
- To make a virgin blackberry mojito, simply omit the rum.
- Although a muddler isn't necessary for this cocktail, one of my favorite ways to make this easy mojito recipe is to place mint leaves, a couple blackberries and fresh lime juice (or fresh limes) in the bottom of a cocktail shaker and muddle (smash) them with a good cocktail muddler. Then proceed with the remaining steps. It's a great option to bring out the full flavor of the recipe. If you don't have a muddler, you can use a mixing glass and a wooden spoon to muddle the ingredients.
- No blackberries? No problem. Feel free to use whichever berries are available, such as strawberries, blueberries or raspberries. Or if you love cocktails with blueberries, try this Blueberry Lemonade Margarita.
- Although granulated sugar is traditional in a classic mojito, simple syrup, which dissolves very easily, is an acceptable alternative.
💭 Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, you sure can. Simply follow the steps above but omit the rum. It's a mocktail recipe that's a big hit with kids.
According to MasterClass.com, muddling is "a method of lightly mashing fruit, herbs, and spices for cocktails. A cocktail muddler is a tool like a pestle that releases the essence from fresh ingredients, adding dimension to your drinks and infusing them with the right balance of flavors". To use this method, simply add all fresh ingredients to your cocktail shaker and "muddle" or mash them together with a muddler or a wooden spoon.
Although dark rum can be used, white, or light rum, is preferable as dark rum tends to overpower the fruit flavors of the cocktail, and change it's bright color. To find out which rum brands are vegan, check out Barnivore, your vegan wine, beer and liquor guide.

⭐ Fun Fact About The Mojito
The mojito used to be used for medicinal purposes. Pirates used to actually create a drink with sugar lime, mint and aguardiente (early rum) for medicinal purposes to treat scurvy and dysentery. When aguardiente was switched out for real rum, the classic mojito officially made its debut!
