Agua de Melon (Cantaloupe Agua Fresca Recipe)
Agua de Melón, also known as Cantaloupe Agua Fresca or melon water, is a refreshing drink made in minutes using only 4 simple ingredients. This agua de melon recipe tastes just like a glass of sunshine and is one of the best delicious drinks ever.
Mexican agua frescas, like this Watermelon Agua Fresca, are a great way to utilize any fresh fruits you have on hand. Once you have the recipe, you can easily switch out the fruit using the same measurements. It will be a win at your next summer party or outdoor barbecue and is a great way to hydrate your kids during hotter months. Plus it’s loaded with vitamin C and other healthy nutrients.
🍈 Ingredients for Agua de Melon (With Substitutions)
- Ripe Cantaloupe – fresh, ripe melon works best for this agua de melon drink. When choosing a cantaloupe, you must squeeze it and smell it. If it’s ripe, it should have some “give” when you poke your fingers into it and smell like a ripe cantaloupe. If you can’t smell it, it’s not ripe. Keep in mind you can use different fruits for this recipe, not just cantaloupe.
- Sugar in the Raw – you can use sugar in the raw, organic cane sugar, agave syrup or artificial sweetener for this recipe. Use more or less sugar per your taste preference.
- Lime Juice – fresh lime juice is best, but you can substitute with bottled lime juice.
- Sea Salt – a little dash will do ya! I use about 1/2 teaspoon of Himalayan sea salt.
- Fresh Water – I prefer using filtered water for this recipe, but any water will do. I start with 3 cups water, however, you can add more or less depending upon your preference.

🥤 How To Make Cantaloupe Agua Fresca
Step 1: Remove seeds from cantaloupe. Cut into quarters. Using a sharp knife, carefully remove the rind from the cantaloupe. Chop into cubes. Add cantaloupe, sugar in the raw, lime juice, filtered water and sea salt to a high speed blender.

👩🏻🍳 Expert Tips
- A ripe cantaloupe is essential for this recipe. When choosing a fresh melon, press your fingers near where it was attached to the vine. It should give some to the pressure of your fingers. It should also have a sweet aroma when you smell it.
- Avoid adding ice to the pitcher before serving. It will dilute the cantaloupe juice. I simply add it to the glasses before serving.
- Give it a taste test before adding more sweetener. Depending upon your taste preferences, it may not even need any.
🌡️ Storage
Agua de Melon is best served immediately after preparation, however, this tasty beverage will last in an airtight container in your refrigerator for up to 5 days.
When serving, be sure to give it a good stir before pouring into ice-filled glasses, as sitting may cause it to naturally separate.
Freezing is not recommended.
